Soca Massive Fancy Sailors

A bold return to traditional Sailor Mas, honouring heritage, movement, rhythm and the people who carry Carnival culture forward.

Who ARE WE ?

Soca Massive Fancy Sailors is an award-winning South London Carnival Mas band led by Captain Michael “Soca Massive” Olton.

Rooted in traditional Trinidadian Sailor Mas, Jamaican sound system culture and British Caribbean heritage, the band has been part of the Carnival road for over 40 years. After decades supporting some of the UK’s most recognised Carnival bands, Soca Massive Fancy Sailors debuted in 2007.

Today, Soca Massive continues to preserve and celebrate traditional Sailor Mas on the road, connecting the Windrush journey, Caribbean memory and Notting Hill Carnival through mas, music, craftsmanship and movement.

We wear our legacy, make culture by hand, and keep the transformational power of Caribbean Carnival alive.

what is sailor mas ?

Sailor Mas is one of Carnival’s original masquerade traditions, with roots stretching back to the 1880s in Trinidad.

Inspired by the sailors who arrived in Trinidad’s ports, Carnival people transformed naval uniforms into performance, satire, beauty and command. Over time, Fancy Sailor Mas became known for its sharp styling, braiding, ribbons, medals, headpieces, movement and rhythm.

In Notting Hill Carnival, Sailor Mas carries another layer of meaning. It speaks to migration, memory and the Caribbean people who crossed water, settled in Britain and brought Carnival with them.

Sailor Mas is history in motion. Characters born from the sea, transformed by the people, and still moving forward.

Simply Red NHC 2026

Simply Red is not simple at all.

For S.S. Massive and crew, red tells the story of a people shaped by sun, sea, movement and memory.

It is the colour of Caribbean spirit: bold, alive, disciplined, beautiful and impossible to ignore.

In the 60th year of Notting Hill Carnival, and with Carnival Monday falling on Trinidad and Tobago Independence Day, Simply Red honours the Windrush generation, Caribbean independence and the Carnival pioneers who transformed the road into a place of freedom, command and cultural pride.

This is red as command.
Red as
courage.
Red as
endurance.
Red as
legacy.
